Preparing for a Maternity Photoshoot
When to book, what to wear, and how Tennessee photographers set up bump portraits — from studio sessions to Smoky Mountain golden-hour.
When to book
Book maternity photos for weeks 30–34. Earlier and the bump reads smaller in-frame; later and comfort — especially standing under lights or hiking to an outdoor location — becomes an issue. If you're carrying twins, aim for weeks 26–30.
Wardrobe basics
Photographers universally agree on the fundamentals:
- Neutral, form-fitting materials. Jersey knits, ribbed cotton, silk, and stretch crepe hold shape and read cleanly on camera. Skip stiff waistbands and structured tailoring.
- Bring 2–3 outfits. A flowy gown (the classic maternity look), a solid tee + jeans (for casual/lifestyle frames), and a partner-coordinated look.
- Solid colors or subtle textures beat prints. Loud florals and busy logos date fast.
- Consider the bump silhouette. Empire waists, wrap dresses, and open-front kimonos all read the bump line clearly.
- Ask about the studio's client wardrobe. In East TN, several studios (including Amber Lanning Photography) maintain a curated gown closet so you don't have to buy a dress you'll wear once.
Studio vs. outdoor in East TN
Outdoor golden-hour sessions in the Smokies foothills, Chattanooga's riverfront, or the Blue Ridge produce warm, dimensional light and a naturally seasonal feel. Best in spring (dogwood, tulip poplars) and fall (October color).
Studio sessions give total control over color, background, and season. Best if you want a specific aesthetic (film, moody, high-key white) that outdoor light won't reliably produce.
Both work. Pick based on what your walls will actually display for the next 20 years.
Coordinating with other pregnancy imagery
Many Tennessee families do a full "third-trimester documentation set":
- Week 28: Elective 3D/4D or HD Live keepsake ultrasound. In East TN, Toes to Nose 3D/4D is the standout.
- Weeks 30–34: Maternity photoshoot.
- First 10–14 days postpartum: Newborn session (many maternity photographers offer a newborn add-on package).
Booking the same photographer for maternity + newborn (and sometimes a fresh-48 hospital session) keeps color, style, and framing consistent.
Prep list for the week of your session
- Hydrate for 48 hours (skin, hair, and the bump all photograph better).
- Skip fake tanner within a week — it turns orange on camera.
- Fresh haircut/color 1–2 weeks before (not the day of).
- Get a manicure — hands are always in the frame.
- No fitted waistbands the day of (avoid indent lines).
- Eat a small meal an hour before. Standing under lights while hungry is miserable.
What sessions cost in Tennessee
- Studio maternity session: $350–$650.
- Outdoor session: $450–$800.
- Maternity + newborn bundle: $700–$1,400.
- Full "motherhood year" packages (maternity, fresh 48, newborn, 3-month, 6-month, first birthday): $1,500–$3,500.

Weeks 30–34 for a singleton, 26–30 for twins. The bump is defined but you're still comfortable standing and posing for an hour.
Outdoor golden-hour sessions in the Smokies foothills, on the Tennessee River, or in the Blue Ridge produce naturally warm light — ideal spring and fall. Studio sessions give consistency and work year-round. Pick based on what your walls will hold long-term.
Form-fitting neutral fabrics: jersey knits, ribbed cotton, silk. Flowy maternity gowns photograph beautifully. Skip busy prints, loud logos, and structured waistbands. Many Tennessee studios maintain a gown closet so you can borrow rather than buy.
Yes if you can — same color grading, framing, and lighting style makes a coherent series to hang on the wall. Most Tennessee maternity photographers offer a maternity + newborn bundle at 10–20% off buying separately.
Reach out at 20–24 weeks. Top Tennessee photographers book 8–12 weeks in advance, especially for spring/fall golden-hour Saturdays.
