Traditional 3D ultrasound reconstructs a surface from 2D echo data. HD Live (sometimes marketed as "5D") is a rendering technique that adds a virtual light source to 3D data — so shadows fall the way they would in a photograph. The result is a dramatically more lifelike face: real skin tone, real depth, and detail like eyelashes or the bridge of the nose. Not every keepsake studio has HD Live-capable equipment. How to prep for the best possible scan
- Hydrate. Drink 60–80 oz of water in the 48 hours before your appointment. Well-hydrated amniotic fluid is clearer to image through.
- Eat a snack 30 minutes before. A small carb snack (juice, fruit, granola) tends to wake baby up.
- Wear two-piece clothing. Easier bump access.
- Book two sessions if you have twins or if you know baby is regularly posterior.

Elective vs. diagnostic — do not confuse them
