Knox County alone sees roughly 5,000 births per year across five delivering hospitals, and the surrounding counties add several thousand more — most of whom drive into Knoxville for OB care, elective ultrasound, and specialist consultations.
The Knoxville landscape breaks cleanly into two hospital systems (UT Medical Center and Covenant Health) plus an independent midwifery scene that has grown steadily since the mid-2010s. Elective and boutique pregnancy services — 3D/4D imaging, maternity photography, doulas, prenatal yoga — are concentrated west of the river along Kingston Pike and in the Bearden / West Knoxville corridor.
Because UT Medical Center houses East Tennessee's only Level IV NICU and its only Maternal-Fetal Medicine department, any pregnancy in East TN that risks out toward complexity ends up routed through Knoxville. That makes provider choice here materially different than in Chattanooga or the Tri-Cities.
